Let's see:

1) Hitchhiking on interstates (the fastest routes) is illegal.

2) You will likely be stopped one or more times by the police and questioned if you are found to be hitchhiking. You may be arrested.

3) Most drivers won't pick up hitchers.

4) The ones that will pick up hitchers might make you wish that they had not.

5) You will spend more time walking than riding.

If none of the above bothers you...go for it.

Are you doing this for the "adventure" part of hitchhiking, or because you feel it's a cheaper way to travel? If it's for the adventure aspect of hitchhiking, I can assure you, it will definitely be an adventure! You never know who will pick you up or what their intentions may be. You'd need to take the usual items for daily use. Extra clothing and rain gear especially. Toiletries for personal hygiene. Money and ID. ( You asked about needing your ID. An ID is required in every state these days. If you don't carry an ID, the police will hold you in jail until they're sure of who you are. ) If you just desire to see Florida, I'd spend the money for a flight to Florida. You can cheap airline tickets to Florida right now. If you hitch, it may take a week to get there. Even a few cheap motels will cost you over $100, plus the food you eat. Flying will get you there in about 4 or 5 hours. It's just difficult to be able to trust people these days. Back in the 50's and 60's hitching was second nature for many people. The 70's saw people start to be more selective on who they accepted a ride with, and those who picked up the hitchhikers were much more selective on who they would pick up. Now days, it just seems too dangerous to take a chance ( either for the hitcher or the driver ), because there is so much violence happening these days. If you decide to go for it, I wish you luck!
